The method

How the calculation works

Your current grade represents the coursework before the final. If C is that grade, W is the final exam weight, and D is your desired course grade, first divide the weight by 100 to turn it into a decimal: w = W ÷ 100.

Required final score = (D − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w

The result is the final exam percentage that makes the weighted course total equal your target. For any possible final score S, your course grade is C × (1 − w) + S × w.

Three common outcomes

Achievable

82.4% current · 30% final · 85% target

You need approximately 91.1% on the final.

Beyond a normal 100% cap

70% current · 20% final · 80% target

You would need 120%. A 100% final produces a maximum course grade of 76%.

Already secured

95% current · 10% final · 85% target

The mathematical requirement is −5%. Even a 0% final leaves 85.5% overall.

Final grade calculator FAQ

What grade do I need on my final?

Enter your current class grade, the percentage your final is worth, and the numeric course grade you want. The calculator solves for the exact weighted final score required.

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?

Convert the final weight to a decimal, subtract your pre-final grade contribution from your target, then divide by the decimal final weight. The formula above shows each part.

Can I still pass my class?

Use the passing cutoff stated by your school or instructor as the desired grade. Passing is not always 60%, so check your course policy rather than assuming a universal cutoff.

What if I need more than 100% on my final?

The target is not reachable through a final capped at 100%. The calculator still shows the mathematical score required and your maximum course grade. If your instructor offers exam extra credit above 100%, interpret the requirement using that course’s rules.

What if my final is worth 20% or 30%?

Enter 20 or 30 in the final-weight field—not 0.20 or 0.30. The calculator divides the percentage by 100 before applying the weighting.

Can my current class grade be above 100%?

Yes. Current and target grades above 100% are accepted for courses with extra credit. Only the final exam weight is limited to 100%.

Does this calculator work for weighted grades?

It works when the final is one weighted part of the course and your current grade correctly represents the remaining coursework. More complex category rules may require your syllabus or gradebook’s own calculator.

What do I need on my final to get an A or to pass?

Enter the exact numeric cutoff from your course policy. An A is not always 90%, and a passing score is not the same at every school.

Are my grades stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and the grades you enter are not submitted to or stored by this calculator.

How accurate is this calculator?

The weighted-grade math retains full JavaScript numeric precision and only rounds for display. Your official result may differ because instructors and gradebooks can use different category and rounding policies.
